As part of a two-week exhibition on “Modern Direct Democracy” jointly organised by the Embassy of Switzerland in Malaysia and the Asia-Europe Institute, H.E Ambassador Michael Winzap delivered a lecture entitled “Direct Democracy: The Swiss Experience.”
On 22nd March 2019, the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), in collaboration with the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism University of Malaya (CARUM) and the Department of International Relations and Strategic Studies, University of Malaya, organised the AEI Lecture Series on the topic of “Terrorism in Southeast Asia: Trends and Challenges”. The lecture series was presented by a panel of distinguished speakers that included Associate Prof. Dr Bilveer Singh, Mr Jasminder Singh, and Mr Muhammad Haziq Bin Jani, and moderated by Dr Roy Anthony Rogers from the Department of International Relations and Strategic Studies, University of Malaya.
This Europe Day High School Outreach aims to create awareness among the high school students in Malaysia about the European Union especially for those who are studying European languages in their school. On April 10, 2018, H.E. Cristiano Maggipinto, the Ambassador of Italy delivered a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) titled “Italy and ASEAN: Political, Cultural and Economic Prospects of a New Relationship”. The Jean Monnet Ambassador Lecture series is a regular lecture series hosted by the AEI with the aim of fostering dialogue and knowledge sharing between the EU diplomatic mission in Malaysia and the general public as well as students and academicians in particular.
Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) hosted the Comparative Regionalism Workshop 2018 as part of its activities as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on April 6 and 7, 2018. The workshop was titled Bridging Regional Knowledge and was conducted by invited lecturer, Dr Paul Gillespie. Dr Gillespie is the Deputy Director at the Institute of British-Irish Studies, and a Senior Research Fellow adjunct in the School of Politics and International Relations, University of College Dublin.
5 April - Vientiane Times: National University of Laos (NUOL) lecturers are currently gaining an understanding of the BRECIL Project - Building Social Research Capacities in Higher Education Institutions in Laos and Malaysia - at the National University of Laos from April 4-6.
On March 2, 2018, Dr. Sameer Kumar, Senior Lecturer, Asia-Europe Institute, delivered a special talk at MRC, University of Malaya, on ‘Industry 4.0 (Industrie 4.0) and its implication on ASEAN’ to a visiting group of Postgraduate students and faculty members of a well-known business Institute in India.
Apart from Malaysia, Dr Rajah was also well-known in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos as the outcome of his economic researchers were evident in the formulation of government policies in these countries.
Dr. Rahul Mishra, Senior Lecturer at Asia-Europe Institute, participated as a panelist in the International Workshop jointly hosted by the Institute of China Studies, University of Malaya, and Nanhua University, Taiwan on 18th January 2018.

I have been driven by a desire to understand Malaysian society, especially Malay perspectives - and I have worked on the assumption that a knowledge of history is vital.
The Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), University of Malaya along with Maastricht University in Brussels, Belgium collaborated for the 3rd AEI-ASEM Summer School programme 2017 with the theme “Cultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe” which was successfully conducted from 24 July to 4 August 2017.
This programme was a joint effort with ASEM partner countries and the Jean Monnet Network on Challenges to Multiculturalism and Multilateralism, and was supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia along with the EU Centre in Singapore.
The sixth and final award recipient went to South-East Asia expert Prof Dr Anthony Milner, in the category of Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia.
