The AEI-ASEM Summer School is an ongoing initiative to enhance the balanced mobility of students, researchers and academics between Asia and Europe in line with one of the decisions of ASEMME 4 in May 2013, Kuala Lumpur.

The 2023 AEI-ASEM Summer School will be the first physical one to be held after 3 years as the programme was moved online during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s AEI-ASEM Summer School will be a 2-week programme consisting of a series of lectures and relevant field trips to focus on various topics of interest to generate conversation and ideas amongst participants in understanding the challenges we face globally.

The AEI-ASEM Summer School is driven by various eclectic approaches that emphasize on interdisciplinary learning, intercultural exchanges, cultural immersion, and appreciation to inclusiveness, cultural diversity and harmony-building in the Asian region.

Lecture modules are assimilated with a strategic mix of activities, field trips and knowledge/skill building activities to provide practical and valuable learning experiences to all participants.

At the end of this course, participants are able to:

  • Compare and differentiate the issues which serve as barriers to social and sustainable development.
  • Assess the use of innovation and Green Technology for sustainable practices.
  • Demonstrate awareness of different civilizational experiences in dealing with contemporary social and development issues.

Theme

The age we exist in today, “the Anthropocene”, is an age where human activity has had a profound impact on everything; not only on the natural world but also on humanity itself. Social and developmental challenges that have occurred in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic have inevitably reshaped our view towards human civilization and the prospects of humanity’s future. More than ever, there is a need to intensify effort to achieve sustainable development and generate cooperation amongst all members of the global community.

The theme of this year’s AEI-ASEM Summer School “Civilizational Dialogue for Sustainable Future” focuses on the various topics of interest to generate conversation and idea amongst participants of diverse backgrounds in understanding the challenges we face globally. It is also focused on encouraging participant to think about impactful solutions and the role they can play in achieving said solutions.
