ASEAN-EU Dialogue 2018

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, Asia-Europe Insitute of University Malaya is organising the ASEAN-EU Dialogue 2018 that will be held on the 25 & 26 July 2018.

This conference aims to explore issues of regional and inter-regional economic integration and discuss possible solutions guided by distinct regional experiences and regional comparatives. Based on the theme of “Regional and Inter-Regional Economic Cooperation: Identifying Priorities for ASEAN and the EU”, suggestions on how economic regionalism and regionalisation are applicable within the broader multilateral context and policy-making will be discussed. In bringing together scholars, experts and officials from both Asia and Europe, the dialogue will contribute to an important dialogue for mutual learning on regional integration approaches led by ASEAN and the EU.

The two-day event consists of 4 panel sessions that will evaluate contributions to regionalism and regionalisation based on the following sub-themes:

Panel 1 - Trade Liberalisation
Panel 2 - Sustainable Development and Income Equity
Panel 3 - Technology and Innovation
Panel 4 - Labour, Service and Talent Mobility

Europe Day 2018 High School Outreach Program

Europe Day 2018 High School Outreach ProgramThe Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence organized its first ever Europe Day 2018 High School Outreach Program, in conjunction with Europe Day on the 8 May 2018. The outreach program was carried out in two Malaysian schools; the Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuala Selangor (5 May 2018) and Sekolah Menengah Sains Seri Puteri (14 May 2018). The program was held in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Malaysia, which aimed at promoting Europe Day to the Malaysian public schools. The day consisted of a presentation as well as games and activities. The program received a positive response from the students and AEI hopes such support would continue for the following year. Professor Anthony Milner elected as non-ASEAN Chair of the CSCAP

Professor Anthony Milner elected as non-ASEAN Chair of the CSCAP

The Non-ASEAN Chair of Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) receives its new Chair, Professor Anthony Milner, after the position was vacated by Ambassador Yoshiji Nogami of Japan. Professor Anthony Milner, a Visiting Professor at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) and the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism University of Malaya (CARUM), will now work with Professor Suchit Bunbongkarn of Thailand (the ASEAN co-chair) to guide the CSCAP, which contributes to regional confidence-building and preventive diplomacy in Asia. CSCAP priorities ranging from cyber-security, the concept of “Rules-based Order”, strategic trade controls (of nuclear materials), and non-proliferation. Professor Anthony Milner will hold the chair until May 2020. Read more

China's Change - Public Lecture by Hugh Peyman

Hugh Peyman, author of the book China’s Change: The Greatest Show on Earth, presented a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) on Tuesday, 3 July 2018. The event was moderated by Tan Sri Dr Kamal Salih and touched on China’s record-breaking economic transformation and the China X-Factor.

China's Change is of course about China and its recent record-breaking economic change. However its most important idea is that China has used a process that enables anyone, anywhere to manage change. This is especially useful in our era of accelerating global disruption. China is only the latest country to do this, though it has done so successfully several times in its past; and has had the Yi Jing (Book of Change) for over two millennia, based on ideas that had been around for at least two millennia before that. AEI Insights: Call for Papers

AEI-Insights: Call for PapersAEI Insights: An International Journal of Asia-Europe Relations is a refereed journal published annually by the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), University of Malaya. We are now calling for original article contributions for January 2019 issue of the journal (Volume 5 Issue 1). We welcome articles of bi-regional interest covering Asia and Europe which may involve topics related to: ASEAN, ASEM, East Asia, EU, geo-politics, geo-strategies, global governance, international co-operation, international organisations, political economy, regional values, regionalism, social issues in bio-diversity, and sustainable development.

Dates (on or before) of confirmation and submission are as follow:

  • Last date for the submission of abstract: 31st July 2018.
  • Last date for the submission of full article: 31st August 2018.

Asia-Europe Institute Executive Director, Prof Dr Azirah Hashim attended the AILA Executive Board and International Committee (AILA EBIC) Meeting 2018 in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Prof Dr Azirah Hashim who is the Malaysian Association of Applied Linguistics President and the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA) Vice President attended the AILA Executive Board and International Committee (AILA EBIC) Meeting 2018 in Groningen, the Netherlands from 3-4 June 2018. It was chaired by the AILA President, Prof Daniel Perrin.

The annual AILA 2018 EBIC meeting took place after the annual conference of the Applied Linguistics Association of The Netherlands (ANELA) held from 1-2 June 2018.

Prof Dr Azirah Hashim attended the AILA Executive Board and International Committee (AILA EBIC) Meeting 2018 in Groningen, the Netherlands.

MAAL is the Malaysian affiliate of the International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA). The meeting was also attended by other AILA affiliate associations and the AILA IC (International Committee) from Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, New Zealand, USA, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, Lithuania, France, and Italy.

AEI welcomed the delegation from HEC Montréal for the Campus Abroad ProgramThe Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) hosted the delegation from the HEC Montréal, Canada as part of their Campus Abroad Program. 20 students visited the institute led by Assoc. Prof Jahan-Ara Peerally and Assistant Professor Aude Le Cottier. A welcoming speech was presented by Prof Azirah Hashim, Executive Director of AEI, followed by a short lecture by Distinguished Professor, Prof Dr Rajah Rasiah. The delegation was then taken for a campus tour of the university. Read more
