Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. This day marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman Declaration', an idea presented by the then French Foreign Minister Robery Schuman in 1950. It was an idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between European nations unthinkable. Schuman’s vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of regionalism in Europe that is now known as the European Union.
This Europe Day High School Outreach aims to create awareness among the high school students in Malaysia about the European Union especially for those who are studying European languages in their school. This will indeed be an ideal avenue for the students to have a glimpse of Europe and to introduce students to information concerning tertiary education in Europe. An additional part of the program will be distributing a mini handbook to the students with some basic information about the European Union. Some comparison between the EU and ASEAN is also included.
