Report: Europe Day High School Outreach 2019 - Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak

The Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), as the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence organised the first High School Outreach programme of the year in conjunction with Europe Day. The event was held on May 8th, 2019 at Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Gombak (SBPI Gombak) from 3.30 to 5.30 pm. A total of 105 students participated in the day’s event which was aimed at enhancing awareness of the European Union (EU) and study opportunities in EU member countries to Malaysian high school students. The programme was opened with greetings by the student MC, Ms Anis Suhaila Mohd Taufik and a short prayer by the student representative.

The AEI team and the students were also welcomed by SBPI Gombak’s Senior Assistant, Mr Zulkipli Abd Latip, and Mr Mohd Asraff Bin Basir, the German Language teacher. The first lecture of the day was presented by Dr Rahul Mishra, programme coordinator for the International Masters in European Regionalism and the second year academic coordinator for the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Program at the AEI. Dr Rahul Mishra spoke about the founding of the European Union and its significance. This was followed by a sharing session by Mrs See Yuen Beh, CEO of CirQuLer Global Centre and member of the Erasmus+ Student and Alumni Alliance. Mrs See Yuen Beh shared some of her experience as a foreign student in EU and also introduced the Erasmus + scholarship for the students’ information.

The students were then divided into groups of six to eight and played a short game of “Guess the Flag” which was facilitated by Mr Aaron Denison, Jean Monnet Program Manager ; Mr Muhammad Sufi, PhD Candidate and Mr Xia Menghu, Reseach Assistant. The students were first asked to name their groups according to any European country before the game commenced. The game basically tested their knowledge about the EU member states and there were also bonus questioned asked based on the flag that they have guessed.

This ended with a tiebreaker trivia for the top three groups. The gifts for the winners were then presented by the Activity Coordinator, Dr Nurliana Kamaruddin. Finally the event was closed with souvenir exchanges from SBPI Gombak’s Principal, Mdm Norhayati Yusoff, to the AEI team and from AEI to the school. A group photo ended the day.
