In the aftermath of the Second World War, in 1951, six countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands) founded the European Coal and Steel Community. The idea was that countries that trade with one another are likely to avoid conflict. In 1958, they expanded their cooperation to other economic sectors and the European Economic Community (EEC) was born, and finally, the European Union (EU) was formally established in 1993.
Since its establishment, the European Union has been a success story, bringing peace and stability to its Member States, the number of which continues to grow. Today, the EU is the world’s largest economic region and a community of values. It is a unique economic and political union between 27 European countries, and has delivered over half a century of peace, stability and prosperity. In 2012, the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of over 60 years of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. It also plays an important role in diplomacy and works to promote these same benefits across the globe. The EU has also delivered aid and development assistance for millions of people worldwide.
Following Russia’s invasion, on the 23rd of June 2022, Ukraine gained a candidate status to the EU. The lecture is aimed to show the historical prerequisites of modern political course of Ukraine from the day of the acquisition of its Independence in 1991. It examines the events leading to Ukraine’s 2013–2014 Euromaidan protest and the historic Constitutional changes, spelling out the post-Soviet country's aspirations to join the EU as well as the analysis of the perspectives of Ukraine’s accession in the light of the ongoing war.
