AEI-ASEM Summer School and Student Symposium 2025
Theme: Environmental and Social Governance (ESG): Toward Sustainable Development in Asia and Europe
Dates: 11 to 17 August 2025
Venue: Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The interconnected challenges of environmental and social governance have become increasingly critical in shaping sustainable development across Asia and Europe. As global regions with distinct yet interrelated trajectories, Asia and Europe face shared responsibilities in addressing climate change, fostering equitable societies, and sustaining democratic values. This Summer School and Student Symposium seeks to provide an interdisciplinary platform for undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage with these pressing issues, contributing innovative ideas and research to shape the future of governance and sustainable development.
Through a research writing workshop, lectures from experts and a student-led symposium, participants will explore key dimensions of sustainability, governance, and social equity in relation to international relations in the context of Asian and European studies. The programme encourages research and insight on collaborative solutions, bridging policy frameworks, cultural perspectives, and grassroots initiatives. By focusing on the nexus between environmental challenges and social governance, this event aims to inspire young scholars to contribute meaningfully to global discourses on sustainable development and international relations.
The Organizing Committee invites abstract proposals for the Student Symposium as part of the Summer School on the theme Environmental and Social Governance: Towards Sustainable Development in Asia and Europe. We welcome submissions from undergraduate and postgraduate students engaged in original research in Asian studies, European studies, international relations, and related fields. Contributions are encouraged to address one or more of the following sub-themes:
We accept proposals for the following formats:
Selected participants will have the opportunity to attend workshops and subject expert lectures, present their research at the symposium and engage in discussions with peers and experts. Certificates of participation will be awarded.
In addition, outstanding student papers will be selected for publication for the institute’s peer-reviewed journal, AEI Insights.
Join us for this unique opportunity to contribute to global conversations on sustainable development and governance while networking with like-minded students and scholars from diverse backgrounds.
