Europe in the New Asia: New Anxieties, New Constructs
1st & 2nd August 2019 • Auditorium, Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The conference brings together an extraordinary group of experts from Europe and the Asian region to review ASEAN-Europe strategic relations across several spheres.
Topics include emerging regional constructs – the new and sometimes competing ways in which the Asian region is today becoming organized, and how these developments compare with the current shaping of Europe. Security challenges facing both Europe and Asia will be examined – and a special session will ask whether the practice of international relations continues to be helpful in analysing the current behaviour of Asian states. Is it time to think about the strengths of non-Western approaches?
Keynote addresses will be given by YB Senator Liew Chin Tong, Deputy Defence Minister of Malaysia; Enrico Letta, former Prime Minister of Italy and Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences Po; Amitav Acharya, Distinguished Professor, American University, Washington D.C. and YM Raja Dato' Nushirwan bin Zainal Abidin, Deputy Secretary General (Bilateral Affairs), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia.
Other prominent speakers include Tan Sri Mohamad Jawhar Hassan (Asia-Europe Institute), Alexander Lukin (Moscow State Institute of International Relations), S.D. Muni (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Farish Noor (S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies), Sven Biscop (Ghent University & Egmont Institute, Belgium).
