As we continue to embrace the “new normal”, the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) would like to share our best wishes for everyone’s good health and safety in the months to come. Like everyone else, from January to June, the AEI have also been adapting to the changes under these circumstyances. All teaching and learning activities were held online and the AEI has hosted several online lecture series and webinars since April 2020. The following are some of the activities at the AEI from January to June 2020. Visit by Delegation from Bryant University student delegationOn 9 January 2020, the Asia-Europe Institute welcomed a delegation of students from Bryant University for a study visit. The delegation, led by Professor Rakesh Mohan, was made up of undergraduate students studying Southeast Asia. The event began with a welcoming address the Deputy Executive Director (Research & Internationalisation) of the AEI, Professor Dr. Sarinah Low Wah Yun, followed by a short presentation on UM and the AEI by Dr Nurliana Kamaruddin. In addition, Dr Rahul Mishra gave a short lecture on the Political Economy of Malaysia and the session was concluded by a short forum between the students and the academic staff of the AEI. Visit by the Ambassador of The Republic of Croatia to MalaysiaOn Tuesday, 11 February 2020, the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), Universiti Malaya was visited by the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Malaysia, His Excellency Dr. Ivan Velimir Starcevic, together with Ms. Tamara Crnjac, the Deputy Head of Mission/Third Secretary. Both of them were welcomed by the Acting Executive Director of AEI, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jatswan Singh and Deputy Executive Director (Research & Internationalisation), Prof. Dr. Sarinah Low Wah Yun, for a short meeting. During the meeting, both parties exchanged views and ideas on promoting the European Union (EU) among students at the Universiti Malaya. Workshop on Academic Writing: Getting Your Paper PublishedOn 12 February 2020, the AEI hosted a workshop for post-graduate students, early-career academics and young researchers. The workshop was aimed at providing specific knowledge as well as skills to write and publish in journals and enhance research and publication. Participants were exposed to the whole process of writing an academic paper and how to prepare a scientific manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journals. Working Conference on ASEAN-UK Relations in the Changing Regional ArchitectureDr. Sameer Kumar, Associate Professor at the Asia-Europe Institute, was invited as a speaker at the “Working Conference on ASEAN-UK Relations in the Changing Regional Architecture” held at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, on February 18-19, 2020. The objective of the conference was to explore the possibilities of strengthening ASEAN-UK relations in a post-Brexit era. Dr. Sameer presented on the topic of “UK’s post-Brexit engagement with ASEAN: Regionalism, Trade and Security”. The conference was organised by ASEAN Studies Center, Universitas Gadjah Mada (ASC UGM), in partnership with the United Kingdom Mission in ASEAN. Visit of Centre For Investment, Endowment And Wakaf (CIEW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)On 27 February 2020, the AEI welcomed the Director of the Centre for Investment, Endowment and Wakaf (CIEW), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Dr. Rafiq Idris. Dr Rafiq was accompanied by Ms. Jurinah Johnny, the Assistant Director (Endowment) of the CIEW, UMS. They met with Associate Professor Dr. Jatswan Singh, Acting Executive Director of the AEI to discuss future research collaboration between the AEI and UMS. Visit by Universitas Wahid Hashim, Indonesia student delegationOn 5 March 2020, the AEI welcomed a delegation of students from Universitas Wahid Hashim, Indonesia. The student visited the AEI as part of their study tour of the Universiti Malaya and also attended a lecture EU-ASEAN relations which was presented by Dr Rahul Mishra. Trinity Long Room Hub Visiting Research FellowshipIn early 2020, Professor Dr. Azirah Hashim was awarded the Trinity Long Room Hub Visiting Research Fellowship at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in Ireland. During the fellowship from March to April 2020, Prof. Azirah undertook research on English in the ASEAN region by focusing on regional aspects of language and identity formation. APACPH International Webinar on COVID19 response in the RegionOn 30 April 2020, the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Medical Association hosted an online webinar. The event was co-moderated by Professor Dr. Sarinah Low Wah Yun, the Deputy Executive Director (Research & Internationalisation) of the Asia-Europe Institute, with Professor Indika Karunathilake. More than 1000 participants registered for the webinar to discuss the different approaches adopted by various countries in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. Read more Strategic Dimensions of Post-Covid WorldOn 22 May 2020, Dr. Rahul Mishra participated in a webinar organised by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, University of Delhi, and gave a talk on “Strategic dimensions of Post-Covid World”. Building Social Research Capacities in Higher Education Institutions in Lao PDR and Malaysia (BRECIL)Two online training sessions were held for the BRECIL project Work Package 4: DEV3- Sustaining research capacity building with the inclusion of ICT technologies. The online session was hosted on 20th and 28th May 2020 with UUM as the lead for the work package. The training covered the introduction to SPSS and included three applications, which were T-test, ANOVA, and correlation. The second online training session provided instructions on utilising Reference Management using Mendeley. The representatives from Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) participated during the ICT training sessions for monitoring and evaluation purposes. The participants were from the National University of Laos (NUOL) and Souphanouvong University (SU), Laos. Cross-training sessions have also been scheduled for June and July. The cross-training session will provide opportunities for participants to implement their skills in different training milieu. The group of trainers involved in the Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions part 1, 2 and 3 will put their training skills into practice in both HEIs and non-participating Associate Partners in Lao PDR. There and six training sessions scheduled with participants from National University of Laos (NUOL), Souphanouvong University (SU), Champassak University and Savannakhet University. JMCOE Ambassador Lecture Series: H.E. Dr. Ivan Velimir Starcevic, the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to MalaysiaThe Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Malaysia, Dr. Ivan Velimir Starcevic, presented an online lecture about the goals, priorities and results of the Republic of Croatia's current presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2020. The Croatian Presidency will be remembered as the Presidency during which the outbreak of the coronavirus took place; this outbreak influenced the implementation of the programme of the Presidency and resulted in Croatia’s strong commitment and determination to continue the Presidency’s activities in the circumstances marked by the battle against coronavirus. ASEAN-EU Dialogue Webinar Series: Perspectives on COVID-19: 'The New Normal'The AEI hosted its first ASEAN-EU Dialogue Webinar series on 10 June 2020, titled “Perspectives on COVID-19: The ‘New Normal’”. The webinar featured Distinguished Professor Dato Dr. Rajah Rasiah, Professor Dr Leef Dierks, Professor Anis H. Bajrektarevic and Dr Rahul Mishra. The four esteemed speakers from Asia and Europe covered issues of the new economic reality as well as the impact of the pandemic on governance and the world order. The webinar was moderated by Dr Nurliana Kamaruddin. APACPH International Webinar 2.0 on COVID-19 pandemic – Developing and Accomplishing COVID-19 Exit Strategy PlanOn 16 June 2020, the AEI Deputy Executive Director, Professor Dr Sarinah Low moderated a webinar hosted by The Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health. The webinar “APACPH International Webinar 2.0 on COVID-19 pandemic – Developing and Accomplishing COVID-19 Exit Strategy Plan” featured speakers from Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and South Korea. AEI International Webinar Series: Professor Sarwar Uddin AhmedOn 18th June 2020, Professor Sarwar Uddin Ahmed from Independent University, Bangladesh presented an online lecture titled “Linkage between Social Responsibility and Institutional Investment: Evidence from Bangladesh.” Professor Sarwar Uddin Ahmed is a Professor of Finance and Director of the BBA Program at the School of Business, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). He is also serving as the Director of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Director of Center for Business Policy Research (CBPR). The lecture covered the relationship between institutional investment and corporate social performance in Bangladesh as well as lessons for emerging economies. The webinar was moderated by Distinguished Professor Dato' Dr. Rajah Rasiah. AEI Ambassador Lecture Series: H.E. Charles Hay, British High Commissioner to MalaysiaThe British High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E. Charles Hay presented an online lecture titled “Future relationship between the UK and ASEAN: Prospects and Challenges”. The departure of the UK from the EU meant that the dynamic of the relations between the UK and ASEAN have also changed. His Excellency addressed the various issue of interest including economic and education linkages that the UK have already established as well as plans in going forward. AEI INSIGHTS
